Bram Stoker describes Dracula

His face was a strong—a very strong—aquiline, with high bridge of the thin nose and peculiarly arched nostrils; with lofty domed forehead, and hair growing scantily round the temples but profusely elsewhere. His eyebrows were very massive, almost meeting over the nose, and with bushy hair that seemed to curl in its own profusion. The mouth, so far as I could see it under the heavy moustache, was fixed and rather cruel-looking, with peculiarly sharp white teeth; these protruded over the lips, whose remarkable ruddiness showed astonishing vitality in a man of his years. For the rest, his ears were pale, and at the tops extremely pointed; the chin was broad and strong, and the cheeks firm though thin. The general effect was one of extraordinary pallor.
Hitherto I had noticed the backs of his hands as they lay on his knees in the firelight, and they had seemed rather white and fine; but seeing them now close to me, I could not but notice that they were rather coarse—broad, with squat fingers. Strange to say, there were hairs in the centre of the palm. The nails were long and fine, and cut to a sharp point. As the Count leaned over me and his hands touched me, I could not repress a shudder. It may have been that his breath was rank, but a horrible feeling of nausea came over me, which, do what I would, I could not conceal.

Journal Questions for ADD Production Course

Remember to put your name on your journals.
Each question is worth 10 marks.
The journal assignments represent 15% of your final grade.

Answer the following in full sentences:

JOURNAL #1

1. Every theatrical production needs to become a team of like-minded people working towards a common goal.  What activities would you suggest the class do to help create unity?

2. What are the main themes in ADracula@?

3. Describe the biggest challenges our class will face bringing such a well-known story to life.

Due: Friday February 26, 2016

JOURNAL #2                                                                      Ms. Lindenberg

1. Explain how personal professional and social skills* can be developed through dramatic arts and then applied in a variety of contexts (personal, social and career).

*collaborating, analyzing, empathizing, speaking, negotiating and communicating

2. Look closely at Dracula. How does his relationship with Jonathan Harker change over time?

Due: Friday March 25, 2016

JOURNAL #3

1. Explain how you have contributed to this production of ADracula@. How have you demonstrated the ability to take responsibility, both as an individual and as a member of a group, when working in a theatre ensemble? (e.g., make artistic decisions, give support to others);

2. Describe how movement and non-verbal communication can be used to portray character, to define relationships among characters, and to communicate dramatic tension.

3. Now that you have had some time to see the class project coming together, you can describe the complexity of putting together a production. Remember to look at all areas of the production in your response such as movement, costume, makeup, advertising, programme, acting, fund-raising and promotion.

Due: Friday May 20, 2016

JOURNAL #4

1. Explain what new skills you have developed as a result of working on ADracula@. Are there other skills that you would still like to explore or improve?

2. Identify and evaluate your personal artistic strengths and weaknesses.

Due: Friday June 3, 2016
